Senior Hayley Werner, is a talented, creative artist when it comes to makeup designs. She gets inspiration from a broad range of sources, and her experience and passion inspires others as well.

What sparked your interest in makeup and costume?
I started doing makeup for the annual haunted house at Leigh. There was an open makeup workshop my sophomore year and I was curious and attended! It’s kinda come full circle now that I teach those workshops for all the new makeup artists.

How do you get makeup ideas?
Like any good housewife, I love Pinterest. I watch way too many YouTube tutorials, TV and horror movies and try to recreate looks I see. But when I do makeup designs for shows, I usually do time period research and play off the costume designs and the shapes of the actors’ faces.

Who are some of your inspirations?
I love Alexys Flemming, Vee Neil, Glenn Hetrick, Michael Westmore, Mykie- it’s a total mix of YouTubers and professionals. I also look at drag performers, they always look so dramatic I love it.

How long did it take you to get as good as you are now?
Oh that’s so sweet! I started two and a half years ago doing special effects makeup, but I still have a lot to learn. I’m mostly self taught but I’m always going to professional workshops and trying out new looks. Basically for every look I post online, there’s like three or four that totally flopped. It’s a lot of trial and error.

Do you prefer doing regular everyday type makeup, or something like making yourself look like a lizard?
I mean, lizard. All day. Every day.
