Star Wars Recap – The Eleight

Star Wars Recap

CAUTION: Potential Spoiler Alert for Star Wars Episode 7!

On Dec. 18th, “Star Wars The Force Awakens” was released in theaters and it was an absolute success. It made over one billion dollars in the first week and sold worldwide (excluding China). The movie skyrocketed past Jurassic World in revenue, and the amazing thing is that Jurassic World was released in China. According to the box office, Jurassic World made $1,670,400,637. Then Star Wars had made $1,975,103,162 in just the first month. Therefore, the Box Office named Star Wars the most successful movie of 2015. Waiting 10 years for this installment was worth it to both the newer and older fans of the saga.

The movie introduced a completely new storyline with a fresh set of actors as well as incorporating the older actors from the original saga. Actors such as Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher all reprised their roles for the new installment.

In the beginning, we meet Rey, Finn, and Poe. Rey is the protagonists of the movie. Rey is a strong willed scavenger working to keep herself fed and alive on the planet of Jakku.  Many conspiracy theories have been constructed due to the fact that we really don’t have any backstory on Rey. We don’t know where she came from and who her parents are. But when she eventually comes in contact with Luke’s original lightsaber, she sees visions of Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker in the past,, leading people to think that Luke is Rey’s father.

Poe is a completely new character who is an experienced X-Wing Pilot that is fighting with the rebellion. We are then introduced to Finn, previously known as FN-2187. Finn was formerly a stormtrooper that felt like he needed to do the right thing, so he leaves The First Order. Shortly after escaping from a star destroyer, Finn crash lands a stolen Tie Fighter on the planet of Jakku with Poe.

Throughout the movie, we also meet the antagonist, Kylo Ren. Kylo Ren, or Ben Solo, is Han Solo’s and Lea Skywalker’s son. After going through intense Jedi training, Ben eventually turns to the darkside and fights against the rebellion with The First Order at his disposal. Kylo is a rather interesting character because he is so desperate for power. He is also the first character to have a hand guarded lightsaber. Kylo is under the rule of Supreme Leader Snoke. A lot of conspiracy theories are formed around Snoke, but we have no background information of him either.

I was very impressed with the movie due to the fact that it resumed a storyline that has been dead for 32 years. J. J. Abrams, the new director, did a fantastic job with the new addition. I loved how Abrams managed to take in Daisy Ridley and John Boyega, both who were relatively newer actors. He put amerature actors into one of the biggest movie franchises in the world. George Lucas did the same back in 1976 with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. In the end, Episode 7 exceeded my expectations for what I had been in store for.
