Spotlight: Interact CLub

Staff Writer: Igor Nikolaev

Leigh’s Interact club brings students together to help their community or school through group efforts. It is overall a social group that is not afraid to improve their communities and help develop social awareness in society.

Q: Does your club differ from the other clubs? If so, how?

A: Interact Club has chapters in schools throughout the world. Our area, Area 11, is part of the largest Interact District in the world, District 5170, which encompasses the Bay Area and includes 13 Areas supporting 110 Interact clubs.

Q: Most Interact clubs try to spread awareness of some topic, what are some topics your club tried to spread awareness of and how did you do it?

A: Interact kicks off each year with the Fall Leadership Conference. The highlight of the conference is the reveal of the Community and International Projects. Every year, each District decides on a Community Project, and all Interact Districts throughout the world collaborate to come up with an International Project. For example, this year our District’s Community Project is Under One Roof. The goal of our project is to prevent homelessness, erase the stigma, and provide aid to those in need.

Q: What are the some specific examples of helping your community?

A: To raise money for our International Project, “Hello My Name Is,” we have put out coin jars, sold Krispy Kreme and greeting cards, held a bake sale and Pasta Pomodoro fundraiser, as well as help hosted an Area-wide Art Gala.

Q: What are the plans for the club’s next social awareness project and/or community service?

A: We plan on continuing to volunteer at the soup kitchen and family shelter. In addition, we plan on participating in a “Stop Hunger Now” event, and the Great American Litter Pick Up. Our area is also in the process of planning a Charity Dinner.
