On Nov. 12, 2015 the University of Iowa hosted more than 70,000 wrestling fans at Kinnick Stadium as the Iowa Hawks took on the Oklahoma State Cowboys under the football stadium lights. It was a record attendance; the adrenaline was high, hope was in the air, and the rush of packing a world-famous football stadium made the wrestlers beyond excited. The high school wrestling teams from Cupertino and Leigh did exactly what the Hawks and Cowboys did just last year, on Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m. when they dragged the mat out onto the Cupertino football field for a special outdoor match. This is the first time that a Central Coast Section team has hosted an outdoor dual match in years.
Each team featured wrestlers listed among the best in the CCS preseason rankings.
The Pioneers are led by Miguel Reyes (ranked No. 3 at 132 pounds), Akhil Vega (No. 4 at 106) and Matt Kelly (No. 8 at 220) and top Longhorns are Leland Ledger (No. 1 at 145), Trevor Kaiser (No. 6 at 113) and Grant Kaiser (No. 8 at 126).
Ledger returns this season after placing second in CCS last year. Trevor Kaiser was fourth for the Longhorns and Reyes was sixth for the Pioneers.
