Spreading holiday cheer

The holidays are a time for both giving and receiving. It’s a time in which you spend with your loved ones and surround yourself with happiness. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to spend the holidays with loved ones nearby. Some people might not even have the money or materials to prepare a holiday meal for themselves. There are so many ways people can give back to the less fortunate during the holiday season, and spread immense joy to those who need it most.

Most of us have a stockpile of stuff that we never really use and closets full of clothes that we haven’t worn in years. We have so many items we’ve forgotten that many people could benefit from. Just think of the joy and appreciation you’d inspire in someone who could really use a new coat or shoes during this holiday season! Donating used items is an exceptional way to help improve the lives of people in need. By donating, you might appreciate what you have even more. So, if you have five winter coats clogging your hallway closet, ask yourself which one you really love, and give the others away.

Another way to give back and help the less fortunate is to volunteer. Volunteering allows us to actively make a difference in other people’s’ lives. While donating money and gently used items is a great way to help others, volunteering gives us a chance to connect with those we help on a personal level.

A great way to help is by finding a local soup kitchen and volunteering a few hours of your time. Not only will you feel incredible for helping those who aren’t as fortunate , but you feel a sense of gratitude for having a stable roof over your head.

There are a few clubs on campus that allow students to give back, especially during the holiday season.

“New to this year, Sisters and Misters of Society club members are looking to volunteer at the Sacred Heart Organization to try and spread the holiday cheer all around. Sacred Heart provides people with food, clothes, and other necessities during the holiday season,” said Kelly Kavousi, senior.

Another way you can help is by volunteering for the American Red Cross. They have an abundance of charitable opportunities that anyone can do. Some of these opportunities include vaccinating a child and buying phone cards for troops away from their families during the holiday season.

There are so many things you can do to make the community a happier and livelier place during the holiday season.
