The start of winter also means the beginning of the soccer season. Both the boys and girls varsity soccer teams started preseason at the beginning of December and play all the way until February.
The girls varsity soccer team had a very successful season last year finishing 10-1-3 in league which earned them first place in their division. Last season was the fourth year in a row that the girls won the division and they hope to keep that streak going this coming season.
This season there is a new coach for both the girls and boys team. The new head coach for the girls team is Nick Hatzke. Hatzke has experience in the MLS, he played for the Houston Dynamo from 2007 until 2009. With so much experience Hatzke is sure to bring a lot to the team.
The girls won their first two preseason games 7-0 against Overfelt High School and James Lick High School. They tied their third preseason game 1-1 against Saint Francis High School.
The boys soccer team did not have as successful of a season with a record of 5-8-1 in league. Although last season wasn’t very successful this year is a fresh start, the team had to rebuild this season after losing 11 seniors last year.
“My goal for the season is to have fun while we play but also bring home some titles for the school,” said junior, forward, Michel Faury.
Another big change for the boys team was getting a new head coach. The coach is now Thomas Murdick. Murdick also has a lot of experience in coaching and even played for Leigh in high school.
Preseason for the boys team hasn’t gone as well as they had hoped. They are 0-1-2 in the preseason but look to grow as a team and improve each day.
This season is sure to bring lots of excitement and accomplishments for both of the soccer teams. The boys’ next game is Jan. 2 against Lincoln at home and the girls’ next game is an away game on Jan. 3 against Sobrato.
