As preseason approaches and teams get ready for the new season, the Sharks hope this is the year they have been waiting for. San Jose has been waiting almost 30 years for a Stanley Cup and wishing this is the season to take it home. With Joe Thornton back in the lineup and the young guys getting more experience, the Sharks have more than enough skill to win the cup. Also, the addition of defender Erik Karlsson and the strong left winger Evander Kane will help there odds.
On October 13, the Sharks acquire defenseman, Erik Karlsson. This was the biggest trade in franchise history and will help the chances for the sharks to win the Stanley Cup. Karlsson is a two time Norris Trophy winner and the captain on the Ottawa Senators. In order to get the talented defensemen, the Sharks had to give up two draft picks, as well as talented forward, Chris Tierney and defenseman, Dylan Demelo.
“We’re a team that’s right there and I think he gives us for sure that extra credibility and that extra something that can win games at times,” Evander Kane tells ESPN.
Last season Joe Thornton was the key to the beginning of the season for the Sharks. Thornton had 36 points in 47 games and was on pace for a record year, but on January 23rd Thornton suffered another knee injury and was out for the season. This was heartbreaking for the Sharks and their fans, but luckily the younger players stepped up and were able to make a Stanley Cup push. Thornton signed a one-year deal and is returning this season with a full recovery. With Thornton back on the team, the Sharks will be able to make another good run in the playoffs.
With Marleau to Toronto and Thornton out for the season, the Sharks were lacking offense production. On February 26, the Sharks acquired Evander Kane in exchange for a draft pick and a young forward. Kane was a great addition to the team as he increased the offensive opportunities. He had great stats with the Sharks with only 17 games with them, he had nine goals, including a 4 goal game. Kane loves San Jose and was excited to sign a 7-year extension with the Sharks.
Nathan Schwartz has been a season ticket holder for 21 years and is a huge fan. “With the addition of Erik Karlsson, I think we have a good chance to win the pacific and have a good shot at the Stanley Cup,” says Nathan Schwartz.
The Sharks have shown up to win it all this year. Their first preseason game was a nice 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks and they hope to continue the success over the next couple games. With Thornton healthy, and the additions of Evander Kane and Erik Karlsson, the Sharks have the best shot to win the cup in franchise history.
