Respect the ride: Lime scooters responds to safety concerns with a customer pledge

By: Griffin Quadro, Staff Writer

Electric scooter-sharing company Lime announced that it’s launching a new safety campaign called Respect the Ride, which will see the company invest $3 million to educate riders on safe scooter practices, distribute helmets, and better maintain its bikes and scooters. The announcement comes just days after the company recalled its Segway Ninebot scooters in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Lake Tahoe due to manufacturing defects that could result in battery explosions.

Lime is asking its riders to take the Respect the Ride pledge, and it will distribute helmets to the first 25,000 people who sign it. The company says it will distribute more than 250,000 free helmets to riders globally over the next six months.

The company is also bringing on a new head of Trust and Safety, and it will hold education and safety summits with local officials. Lime says, “It’s looking to partner with cities to bring more protected bike lanes and better infrastructure for micro mobility solutions, like in-app geofencing to fix improper parking issues.” The company is also developing virtual parking zones and features to alert riders when they’re riding on the sidewalk or have parked improperly. It’s good to know that Lime is focusing on safety for scooter riders as well as pedestrians who share the sidewalks. Lime has had many

problems with deaths and injuries as well, the e-scooter over this past year has caused over 1000 injuries and just under 100 deaths in the U.S. having lime really getting safety their main priority.
