After the premiere of the Netflix Original To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (TATBILB) on August 17 of 2018, lead actor Noah Centineo experienced a newfound fame. His Instagram account, @ncentineo, skyrocketed from 800k to over 13.4 million in just two months.
Although the movie in itself had a great plot and an even better ending, Centineo’s character, Peter Kavinsky, gained the most attention. Centineo quickly became known as “America’s Boyfriend.” The characterization of Centineo in TATBILB immediately sent thousands of girls into a search for their own Peter Kavinsky. The chemistry between Lana Condor, who plays Lara Jean, and Centineo was enough for every girl to wish they were in a relationship.
Shortly after the release, it was announced that Centineo would be playing the lead role in Netflix’s movie Sierra Burgess is a Loser (SBIAL), premiering on September 7 of the same year.
Because TATBILB was such a good movie, SBIAL had very high expectations.
However, after the release, many fans were disappointed with the poor message the movie sent about catfishing. Centineo’s cult following, however, worshipped his character Jamey and the relationship he had with lead protagonist Sierra Burgess, played by Shannon Purser.
Purser also has a similar fame story because of her character Barbara Holland in Netflix Original Stranger Things.
Many of the same people that enthusiastically tweeted about TATBILB did the same with SBIAL, even though the movie didn’t deserve it.
In short, SBIAL is predictable, unrealistic, and a poor influence on insecure girls.
Although Burgess experiences a surge of confidence in her song “Sunflower,” her consistent catfishing and self-doubt throughout the whole movie proves just how insecure she is.
The immediate downfall of the movie was when Burgess spread pictures of her “friend, ” Veronica, hooking up with her ex-boyfriend.
Even worse, Veronica was very quick to forgive Burgess. If it had been me, I wouldn’t have forgiven Burgess at all.
Similarly, Jamey forgave Burgess and her catfishing after hearing her song.
It’s easy to sympathize with Burgess’ insecurity, but after all of the terrible things she did to hurt the people she cares about, she did not deserve to be forgiven.
It seems odd that so many people would praise a badly written movie such as this one.
However, this is not the first or last time Netflix has released a bad movie.
Bird Box, released on December 21 of 2018, sustained a large amount of admiration from fans across almost all social media platforms, including Instagram, Twitter, and Tumblr.
The amount of memes based off of this movie was astonishing. Everyone that I know that hadn’t seen the movie or known of its existence decided to watch it purely because they wanted to understand the memes.
With so much hype built around the Sandra Bullock movie, expectations were very high. My friends continued to applaud the movie, but I, however, was not very satisfied with it.
The time jumps were confusing, the characters were dumb, and the plot seemed unreasonable.
One of the weirdest things about the movie for me was how the “monster” could convince you to kill yourself by one direct glance outside, through a window, or camera lens, but it couldn’t penetrate the walls of a building.
Then again, what horror movie doesn’t have at least one outrageous aspect.
Even though I thought the movie was bad, I still see Bird Box memes on my timeline at least twice a day.
It only takes one person, a certain actor, or a few memes to spark up a cult following.
Whether the movie is good or bad, the content will be eclipsed by the endless cycle of memes on Instagram.
